Error-Process

04.21.2026

Recently, I made a very small drawing on a gold-colored silk brocade cardboard surface. It was my first time working with this material, which was a litte bit challenging, as it required using a very fineliner to control details within a very small space. The starting point of this work comes from my recent reflections on "failure." Influenced by my Chinese educational background, I have always set very high standards for myself and tend to fear failure, often falling into cycles of self-pressure and overthinking. Over time, however, I began to realize that failure is not necessarily something to resist. Instead, it can be an honest presence—unpleasant at times, but truthful. It points out problems and pushes me to adjust and reorient myself.

So I wanted to visualize this feeling and turn "failure" into a personified figure, like a companion, and I named it "ERROR."

But during the process of drawing, something very direct happened: I drew the image in the wrong direction.

By the time I noticed it, the drawing was already completely upside down, including the hanging cord and tassels, which were also reversed. From a perspective of "correct execution," this was clearly a failure. Yet at that moment, I found it interesting—because I was drawing "failure," and it had, quite literally, occurred within the work itself.

In the end, I chose not to correct it. Instead, I preserved this state and framed the work so that the image itself remains upside down.

For me, this work has become a very concrete experience. It made me realize that failure does not always need to be corrected; sometimes it can remain as part of the work itself. In life as well, we make mistakes and experience failure, but there is room for error. Failure does not necessarily mean an end—it can also be a gentle reminder that allows us to pause, adjust our direction, and continue forward.
